
Arístides Hernández Guerrero (ARES), Havana, 1963. Self-taught artist, he is a M.D. specialized in Psychiatry. Ares currently works in Havana as a freelance artist working on cartoons for publications, book illustrations, posters, paintings and tridimensional pieces.
His works have been published since 1984 in the most important Cuban publications and numerous media worldwide and also has been exhibited around the world. He has published twenty-four books and has contributed with illustrations to another hundred books. Ares has participated in the most important and diverse humor events worldwide, winning 109 national awards and more than 160 in international contests, among them the World Press Cartoon Grand Prix and The United Nations Ranan Lurie Award.
He was nominated to the international list of World Best Cartoonists in 1994 by Witty World magazine (United States), nominated for Cuba to the Quevedos Iberoamerican Cartoon Award, included in the Cuban Art Memory Book as one of the most relevant visual artists of Cuba in the 20th Century. In 2002 Ares was honored in Cuba with the National Culture Medal and in 2020 he received the National Humor Award for his life achievement.
